Evolution Unit Review
I learned a lot during this unit about the more complex aspects of evolution. We expanded on the general idea of evolution and the processes that cause it. We also learned about some of the processes that affect species without evolution coming into play at all. I learned the most from the activity where we read our evolution books. I read the book The Dragons of Eden by Carl Sagan and I enjoyed it a lot. I made a lot of connections about my own heredity and inherited traits during the unit. For example, I have green eyes, and this is because both my parents had recessive genes that they passed down to me.
Personally, I had a lot of fun during this unit. I was able to closely interact with my classmates and form friendships as well as cover new topics. During this unit, I learned about the process of evolution and my own heredity. I was able to learn new skills, such as micro pipetting and also experimented with making videos. My favorite activity was the Transitional Species video because I love anything that has to do with art and creating images from your own imagination, so the tie in there was very satisfying. I also enjoyed the dissections (even though it was very smelly) because I like doing things hands-on. My only wish was that we had been given more intricate procedures to follow, because it got quite repetitive. Also, I enjoyed the field trip to the Lawrence Hall of Sciences, but similarly wished there were better instructions or background given to us. All in all, the evolution unit was interesting and has been reasonably enjoyable.
